With their new release, the VocaMe Ensemble explores a unique chapter in medieval cultural history: the previously unrecorded works of the 13th-century Beguine mystic Hadewijch of Brabant. In close collaboration with Belgian scholars, they have created a programme that impressively combines historical research with artistic imagination. The program brings together 14 pieces that give sonic form to Hadewijch’s poetic universe. Titles such as Om grote minne, Altoes mach men van minnen singhen, and Men mach den nuwen tijt reflect the central themes of her writing: the all-encompassing force of Minne (love), the renewal of time, and the human quest for inner understanding. The recurring idea of the “new time” (nuwen tijt) resonates not only with the changing seasons, but also with a profound sense of spiritual renewal. Unlike many mystical writers of her time, Hadewijch speaks in a language of striking sensuality. In songs such as Die voghele sijn nu blide or Tsaermeer ontspringhen ons de bloemen, nature unfolds as a living metaphor: blossoming flowers, singing birds, the movement of the stars. Yet these images always reflect an inner landscape shaped by longing, vulnerability, and desire. Even darker emotional states emerge, as in Die tijt es donker ende cout, where coldness and absence become tangible experiences. VocaMe responds to this richness with a highly nuanced musical language. The compositions move between contemplative stillness, lyrical melancholy, and rhythmically vibrant passages. The voices blend into a transparent yet intense texture, supported by selected medieval instruments that evoke both historical depth and immediate presence. The program follows an inner dramaturgy: from the invocation of Minne, through transformation and uncertainty, toward renewal and awakening. Pieces such as Die tijt vernuwet met sinen jaren and Alse ons dit nuwe jaer ont steet mark moments where time appears not as linear, but cyclical an essential aspect of Hadewijch’s worldview. Following their acclaimed world premiere recording of the Byzantine composer Kassia and further projects devoted to Hildegard of Bingen, VocaMe continues its artistic mission: rediscovering female voices of the Middle Ages and bringing them into a contemporary listening context. This album is more than a musical realization it is a poetic reimagining of one of the most compelling voices of medieval Europe. Hadewijch’s vision of Minne emerges not as an abstract idea, but as a deeply human experience: sensual, searching, and timeless.

XIII-wieczna beginka pozostawiła po sobie poezję, w której duchowość splata się z niezwykle zmysłowym językiem natury, emocji i doświadczenia miłości rozumianej jako Minne – siła prowadząca człowieka ku wewnętrznej przemianie i zjednoczeniu z Bogiem. Zespół VocaMe po raz pierwszy przenosi ten fascynujący świat do przestrzeni dźwięku, prezentując czternaście utworów zrekonstruowanych we współpracy z belgijskimi mediewistami.
